1. Curiosity Won’t Kill the Cat

Whether you’re just leaving university as a fresh graduate, or if you’re leaving your tenth tech job, it’s vital that you’re curious about the industry. Whilst the burden of experience might sometimes make you sour to new, seemingly exciting ideas and concepts, if you’re not curious about them, why are you working in technology? Big tech companies are desperate for inquisitive candidates because they know that they’re the ones that are going to question norms, processes and drive innovation. That’s why some of the most creative technology teams in the world – like Valve – who designs revolutionary games like Half Life and Team Fortress 2 – have a completely flat structure.

2. Willingness to Change

While you might have some grand image in your head about your next job as a Dynamics AX Project Manager, it’s best if you approach all new job scenarios in technology as openly as you can. That’s because technology moves quickly, and therefore those who work in it need to move even quicker. If you can show flexibility and willingness to change, you’ll be demonstrating key skills that all big tech employers are looking for. This could be something as small as saying you’re flexible about your job title. Or, it could be something as big as accepting that you’re going to have to move half way across the world for your next role.

3. Own It

If you want to get the job, you need to sound like you know what you’re talking about in your interview. This means 100% owning it. If you don’t know the answer to a question, try not to get shy and awkward, turn the conversation around. A fantastic example of this comes from one interview-passing Microsoft job applicant: One candidate recently interviewing for a program management position got asked some very tech-heavy questions. He was even asked to code something on the spot. This candidate said, "Listen, I could write some code for you, but quite honestly my answers and my code are going to be mediocre. My strengths are in design and function and how users interact with products. I'd like to focus more time on that."

4. No Specific Degree…

As most large tech employers will tell you, it doesn’t matter what’s on your degree certificate (as long as it’s not a Fail!). It’s more about the innovation that you can bring to the table. While the vast majority of interns and new employees at large tech and software companies (like those with careers in Microsoft Dynamics) will have degrees, and probably even some postgraduate experience, don’t let this put you off if you’re not quite there in terms of formal training. If you’re applying for a job in Microsoft Dynamics AX, GP or NAV, fantastic knowledge of what an ERP is will put you in excellent stead in your interview.
