About The Company:
I am working with a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to providing digital services and IT solutions for the UK's education sector. They work closely with universities, colleges and learning providers to give advice and guidance as well as working with 3rd party vendors.

Role Overview:
As the Infrastructure Specialist, you will play a crucial role in updating, maintaining, and securing a number of Linux servers, and occasionally Windows-based servers, along with administering databases. Your responsibilities will extend to supporting authentication mechanisms and contributing to infrastructure design and planning. Working collaboratively with a close-knit team, you will implement improvements to systems, leverage technology, and provide guidance on adopting new technologies. This role is pivotal in ensuring the day-to-day technical expertise needed to administer servers across AWS, Azure, and VMWare environments, supporting a range of applications critical to the company's information and digital platforms.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and secure Linux servers, including occasional Windows-based servers.
  • Administer and maintain databases, supporting authentication mechanisms.
  • Contribute to infrastructure design and planning, implementing improvements.
  • Provide technical expertise for servers across AWS, Azure, and VMWare environments.
  • Support applications running commercial, bespoke, and open source tools.
  • Collaborate with the team to resolve complex technical issues.
  • Leverage AWS features such as VPC, EC2, IAM, CloudWatch, and more.
  • Utilize automation technologies like CloudFormation, Terraform, and AWS OpsWorks.
  • Employ configuration management and compliance tools (e.g., Chef, InSpec).
  • Administer security in Apache-based web systems.
  • Integrate UNIX, Mac, and Windows systems.
  • Manage authentication protocols, including Shibboleth/SAML, LDAP, and Kerberos.
  • Develop and maintain administrative scripts and tools using BASH.
  • Oversee Linux patch/updates management.
  • Provide support for UNIX-based production applications and databases.
  • Manage and maintain MySQL databases.

Key Requirements:

  • Good, concise communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to develop technical solutions for complex issues.
  • Work effectively in a close-knit team and independently in a fast-paced technical environment.
  • Awareness of public relations implications in a similar context.
  • Negotiation skills to resolve conflicting priorities.
  • Proven experience in Linux system administration, particularly Ubuntu or other Debian-based Linux.
  • Experience with AWS, VMWare, and virtualized environments.
  • Familiarity with automation technologies (CloudFormation, Terraform).
  • Proficient in configuration management and compliance tools (e.g., Chef, InSpec).
  • Experience in administering Apache-based web systems.
  • Familiarity with UNIX, Mac, and Windows systems integration.
  • Knowledge of authentication protocols (Shibboleth/SAML, LDAP, Kerberos).
  • Excellent shell scripting skills (BASH).
  • Experience with Linux patch/updates management.
  • Solid experience in supporting UNIX-based production applications and databases.
  • Knowledge of MySQL database management.
  • Relevant IT qualifications or equivalent demonstrable systems administration experience.
