1. Eat the Frog. Do the most important tasks first.
You have a long list of things to do. Some tasks are easier than others. More often than not, you choose the simplest job or the one you enjoy the most first. As the old saying goes, if you can eat a frog first thing in the morning, everything else in your day will be a lot easier.
2. Get a new perspective
Software developers are skilled people. Like artists, individual developers have their own style. Why not step outside the box and look into new ways of working or new areas of development? Broadening horizons can unlock new skills and commercial opportunities.
3. Leverage flow
Ever read a copy of “Flow” by Mihayl Csikzentmihalyi? May not, but you should. This Hungarian psychology professor discovered a perfect state of productivity, whereby individuals balance their level of skill with the challenge at hand. The right balance of each will help you to achieve flow, and cruise through projects fully engaged and with top results.
4. Be selfish. Ignore everything else.
Whether it’s buzzing or dinging, turn your phone to silent and put it to one side when working. It’s simple but many people forget.
5. Thinking space
Software development is strategic and creative. All actions have a knock on affect and it requires forward thinking and planning to enable success. Allow yourself and those around you time to think. Let ideas soak-in and reap the rewards of well-thought-out, quality software development.
